ALCOHOL AND BETA BLOCKERS
The effects of atenolol and metoprolol do not appear to be changed by alcohol. Some preliminary evidence suggests that the detrimental effects of alcohol and atenolol (with chlortalidone) or propranolol are additive on the performance of some psychomotor tests, and there is some evidence that alcohol modestly reduces the haemodynamic effects of propranolol. The blood pressure lowering effects of sotalol
appear to be increased by alcohol.
The clinical significance of these minor effects is undetermined, but they seem unlikely to be of great importance. See also antihypertensives, for general comments about antihypertensives and alcohol consumption.
