
MACROLIDES AND STATINS - ATORVASTATIN
Clarithromycin and erythromycin moderately raise the levels of atorvastatin. Note that the macrolides differ in their ability to inhibit CYP3A4, see macrolides other macrolides may interact similarly.
If concurrent use is necessary it would seem wise to warn the patient to be on the look out for symptoms of myopathy (e.g. muscle pain or weakness). Be especially cautious in patients also taking other drugs that interact with statins (e.g. fibrates and diltiazem). Note that the manufacturers of telithromycin suggest avoiding concurrent use (see guidance under simvastatin below).
