METHYLPHENIDATE AND TRICYCLICS

Medical Diagnosis and Drugs, Medications
Several studies have reported an increase in imipramine or desipramine levels
following the addition of methylphenidate, which takes several days to occur, and several days to wear off. Isolated cases of behavioural problems have been seen, but a
large review indicates the absence of a clinically significant interaction.
This interaction is of unknown importance, but tricyclic antidepressant toxicity
could theoretically occur. Bear this in mind in case of an unexpected response to
treatment.
