PROPAFENONE AND SSRIS

Medical Diagnosis and Drugs, Medications
Fluoxetine markedly inhibits the metabolism (5-hydroxylation) of propafenone, and
paroxetine would also be expected to behave similarly, but the clinical consequences
of this are unknown. Fluvoxamine would be expected to inhibit the metabolism of
propafenone by N-dealkylation, but in most patients this is only expected to have a
small effect.
Until more is known, it would be prudent to use caution when giving fluoxetine or
paroxetine with propafenone. Sertraline, citalopram and probably escitalopram
would not be expected to interact and an in vitro study supports this suggestion.
